The Lindy Hop, Jitterbug, Charleston, Balboa, Collegiate Shag, & Blues Dance Mailing List of Swing Buffalo (for Buffalo and the surrounding area)...

Buffalo Hop is THIS SATURDAY!  WOO-HOO!  I am so psyched!  If you have the time on Monday, you can catch Artpark's Dancing in the Park in the afternoon and then hit Lindy Fix.  We had a great turn-out at UB on the Green and a lot of people took Lindy Fix flyers and free passes, so I anticipate seeing some new faces!  (We'll have pictures and video up soon of Queen City Swing's participation at that event!)  Artpark's event overlaps Lindy Fix this Monday, so I won't be able to go, but if you go, take pictures so I can see how much fun it is!  The Sugar and Jazz Orchestra will be playing on Tuesday, though I'm not sure if there will be dancing.  We're in our fifth week of classes and then we'll be off for awhile.  Queen City Swing will be reprising the Pink Panther routine at the next Mary Seaton Room dance at Kleinhan's two Wednesdays from now, so come check that out!  Plus, there are already big plans in the works for the August Buffalo Hop!  Stay tuned for the special activities that are going to coincide with our last summer dance!

Western New York's own "King of the Clarinet" returns to Artpark with his celebrated big band to pay a powerful tribute to one of the greatest bandleaders who ever lived. Enjoy all of Artie Shaw's timeless tunes from "Begin the Beguine" and "Star Dust" to "Moonglow" and many, many more!

Shaw, a BRILLIANT JAZZ CLARINETIST, was one of the most enigmatic, daring and adventurous bandleaders of the swing-era. An intellectual, he hated public life and the music industry. Over the course of his short career he formed 10 orchestras and disbanding most of them after only a few months. At the peak of his career in the years just before World War II, Shaw was matched by few other musicians in popularity and technical skill.

SAL ANDOLINA BIO

In the worlds of classical music and jazz, crossover versatility is rarely found in a single individual. Over the past decade, however, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra has witnessed the keen achievements of one of Buffalo's native sons in the person of Salvatore Andolina, who is now the BPO's hottest switch-hitter in his permanent position of clarenitist, bass clarinetist and saxophonist.

While Andolina has been a full-time member of the BPO for the past dozen seasons, his association with the Orchestra began in the late '70s when he was a standout performance major at the University at Buffalo as a full-scholarship student on the clarinet. Upon completion of his degree at UB under former BPO clarinetist James Pyne, Andolina pursued advanced clarinet studies with Stanley Hasty at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester and coaching with the legendary Benny Goodman in New York City.

In addition to appearing as a soloist with the BPO, Andolina has been featured with the Rochester Philharmonic, the Grand Rapids Symphony, the Fresno Philharmonic, the Arts Nova Chamber Orchestra and the North American New Music Festival. More significantly, Andolina has been featured on at least 15 studio recordings, including his prized CD: "Like Benny to Me," a tribute to Goodman.

Beginner Jitterbug Lesson 8-8:30

This is the one and only lindy event in Buffalo and it's located just off Buffalo's famous Elmwood strip.  Buffalo is finally on its way to establishing a lindy scene.  For those of you who don't know, Lindy Hop is a form of swing dancing that came about in the late 20s and early 30s.  It went through a resurgence in the mid to late 90s and is going strong across the US and dozens of other coutries.  Swing dances featuring lindy are a very social event.  Everyone dances with everyone, though it's not typicslly a dating venue.  Swing is a lifestyle based on the pure joy of dance: focussed on fun.  So bring your spirits and prepare to smile!  Beginners are not only wanted, they are required!  We need you to make this happen!

DJ'd swing music will feature Big Band, classic swing like the Rat Pack & Ella, Blues, & other popular contemporary swing music.

Lesson taught by Rob & Alaina.
