The Lindy Hop, Jitterbug, Charleston, Balboa, Collegiate Shag, & Blues Dance Mailing List of Swing Buffalo (for Buffalo and the surrounding area)...

SwingBuffalo.com is back up (mostly - the forum is unavailable).  The temporary server is a bit slow.  The hosting company bought a new server to replace the one that died, so hopefully they'll be hosting us again soon.

Big weekend this week!  This is the last UB swing dance of the semester.  Sam is DJ'ing.  Some come out and take advantage of this last opportunity to dance at UB before the summer hits!  It should be a good one.  Don't forget, new classes are starting up April 12th.  Space is limited, so pre-register now (by responding to this email).

This is also the weekend of Balboa Rendezvous in San Diego!  I fly out today and will be competing in the amateur Tap-out competition (if I can get a slot), so wish me luck!  -Rob

Beginner Jitterbug Lesson 8-8:30

DJ: Rob

This is the one and only lindy event in Buffalo and it's located just off Buffalo's famous Elmwood strip.  Buffalo is finally on its way to establishing a lindy scene.  For those of you who don't know, Lindy Hop is a form of swing dancing that came about in the late 20s and early 30s.  It went through a resurgence in the mid to late 90s and is going strong across the US and dozens of other coutries.  Swing dances featuring lindy are a very social event.  Everyone dances with everyone, though it's not typicslly a dating venue.  Swing is a lifestyle based on the pure joy of dance: focussed on fun.  So bring your spirits and prepare to smile!  Beginners are not only wanted, they are required!  We need you to make this happen!

DJ'd swing music will feature Big Band, classic swing like the Rat Pack & Ella, Blues, & other popular contemporary swing music.

Lesson taught by Rob & Arlette.  Rob is a lindy hop & balboa instructor & performer from Santa Fe, NM, where he performed with Moving People Dance Theatre and New Mexico Swing Fix.  Rob travels to many national level workshops and has been honing his skills since 1998.  Arlette is a broadly skilled & experienced lindy & balboa instructor.  She performs a variety of dance styles and travels to many national level workshops.

Frankie Manning was born in 1914, and grew up in Harlem with the Savoy Ballroom as his backyard. A part of the Savoy Ballroom dance scene since the 1930‚Äôs, Frankie has been a major force behind the development of swing dance, a truly American art form. He toured the world with the jazz greats including Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Cab Calloway, among others. Frankie performed in several films including Everybody Sings and Hellzapoppin', and in 1937 gave a command performance for King George VI. Frankie was featured in a 1941 Life magazine article that chronicled the evolution of the Lindy Hop.

Swing dancing became dormant with the onset of Rock n' Roll, but saw a resurgence beginning in 1986. Renewed interest in swing dancing and the Lindy Hop brought Frankie back on the scene, and set him globe-trotting, spreading his own brand of dance magic through workshops and lectures.

Frankie's fabulous dancing and Cheshire smile have served as inspiration to generations of Lindy Hop enthusiasts, who consider him to be a cultural icon. Now in his 95th year Frankie‚Äôs still knocking ‚Äò em dead! Don‚Äôt miss the master!
