Subject: SwingBuffalo - Lindy Fix on the Road at Pearl Street Grill 8:30pm
The Lindy Hop, Jitterbug, Charleston, Balboa, Collegiate Shag, & Blues Dance Mailing List of Swing Buffalo (for Buffalo and the surrounding area)...
Lindy Fix is on the Road again THIS MONDAY at Pearl Street Grill to celebrate Independence Day! It starts at 8:30 (not 8). This event is free (though Pearl Street reserves the right to possibly charge a cover later in the night). There will be no Intro to Bal class this Monday due to the Holiday, so review what you know by looking up youtube videos (there should be many new ones from the recent ABW event). Also, to gear you up for Rhythm Shuffle, Sylbie will be teaching a Big Apple progressive class before Lindy Fix once the Balboa class is complete so that you can join in on Frankie's Big Apple routine when we do it at the workshop. Registration for Rhythm Shuffle is now officially open! Go to the register page on RhythmShuffle.com today and take advantage of the Early Bird discount!

Beginner Balboa with Rob & Zoë
Polish Cadets (Upper Hall), 927 Grant Street, Buffalo, NY
Created by: Buffalo Swing
6:45 - 7:45 Monday July 12th 2010
Rob & Zo, fresh from their Honeymoon will be teaching a progressive 6 week session of beginner level balboa (and Bal-Swing) Starting June 28th. It will be every Monday just before Lindy Fix from 6:45 to 7:45. No partner necessary. Cost is $13 for walk-ins or $10 per class if all 6 weeks is paid up-front. Balboa is a swing dance which came from Newport beach in California back in the 1930's during the big band swing era. It is close, fast, & spinny yet is a versatile dance which can be danced slowly as well. Balboa merged later on with Randy Swing to be called Bal-Swing where the connection opens up to allow fancy and amazing moves. The timing of this class is fortuitous since this class will prepare you for the annual Rhythm Shuffle workshop in September. It will give you a solid enough foundation to absorb the workshop material and retain it. It's also damn fun to boot. I know you'll love Balboa and amaze your friends when you demonstrate the skills you will learn in this class.

Beginner Jitterbug Lesson 8-8:30
This is the one and only lindy event in Buffalo and it's located on the up-and-coming Grant Street area. Buffalo is finally on its way to establishing a lindy scene. For those of you who don't know, Lindy Hop is a form of swing dancing that came about in the late 20s and early 30s. It went through a resurgence in the mid to late 90s and is going strong across the US and dozens of other coutries. Swing dances featuring lindy are a very social event. Everyone dances with everyone, though it's not typicslly a dating venue. Swing is a lifestyle based on the pure joy of dance: focussed on fun. So bring your spirits and prepare to smile! Beginners are not only wanted, they are required! We need you to make this happen!
DJ'd swing music will feature Big Band, classic swing like the Rat Pack & Ella, Blues, & other popular contemporary swing music.
Lesson taught by Mark & Alaina.

Come to the Memories USO Geneseo Airport Hangar Dance! PLEASE NOTE, this is a historical recreation of a "USO styled" event and in no way sponsored or endorsed by the United Service Organization (USO).
This year our music will be provided by a 10 piece orchestra: The Solomon Douglas Swingtet, featuring Bria Skonberg, vocalist.
Admission is $10 at the door. Doors open at 6pm with dancing from 7pm to 11pm. Food is available at additional cost. Cash bar. WWII era dress encouraged, but not required.
Solomon Douglas is a jazz pianist and bandleader, whose various bands have played at countless swing dance events and music festivals in North America, Asia, and Australia in the past ten years. His experience as a swing dancer and dance instructor gives him an understanding unique among musicians of the music of the Swing Era, and his three-month tenure in 2006 as the pianist in the world-famous Glenn Miller Orchestra left him with a special fondness for the big-band music of World War II. The Solomon Douglas Swingtet makes frequent appearances at large venues such as the Glen Echo Spanish Ballroom (DC) and the Century Ballroom (Seattle). http://solomondouglas.com/
Jazz trumpeter and vocalist Bria Skonberg, from Vancouver, BC, has been performing on stage for over 20 years. She has been featured as a bandleader and guest artist all over North America, Europe, China and Japan playing alongside such greats as Warren and Allan Vache, Bucky Pizzarelli and Howard Alden. In Vancouver she leads and manages Brias Hot Five and The Big Bang Jazz Band, and performs as a soloist and vocalist with Canadian icon Dal Richards and his Orchestra both live and on his last two albums. She is a co-founder of the groundbreaking all-female jazz group, Mighty Aphrodite, comprised of members from the US and Canada. http://www.briaskonberg.com/
