Beginner Jitterbug Lesson 8-8:30

This is the lindy event in Buffalo and it's located on the up-and-coming Grant Street area.  Buffalo is finally on its way to establishing a lindy scene.  For those of you who don't know, Lindy Hop is a form of swing dancing that came about in the late 20s and early 30s.  It went through a resurgence in the mid to late 90s and is going strong across the US and dozens of other coutries.  Swing dances featuring lindy are a very social event.  Everyone dances with everyone, though it's not typicslly a dating venue.  Swing is a lifestyle based on the pure joy of dance: focussed on fun.  So bring your spirits and prepare to smile!  Beginners are not only wanted, they are required!  We need you to make this happen!

DJ'd swing music will feature Big Band, classic swing like the Rat Pack & Ella, Blues, & other popular contemporary swing music.

Lesson taught by Mark & Julia.

Django Reinhardt Centennial Celebration

Tralf Music Hall, 622 Main Street, Buffalo, NY

8-11 Thursday May 27th, 2010

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=114824798554837

Django Reinhardt Centennial Celebration Featuring Stephane Wrembel & the Django Experiment, Babik.

January 23rd, 1910.  In a small caravan in Belgium a Gypsy woman gave birth to a man that would change the face or music forever.  Jean Baptiste “Django” Reinhardt would grow to be one of the most innovative and revered guitar players the planet had ever known.  With the use of only two fingers on his fretting (left) hand, Django would go on to bring the guitar to the forefront of modern music influencing and inspiring the talent of Jimi Hendrix, Joe Pass, Al DiMeola and many more.  Blending American jazz with his French Gypsy sound, he created a style known today as Gypsy Jazz.

100 years later in Buffalo, NY the celebration of his life continues when two groups committed to Django’s style converge on The Tralf Music Hall.  7 time Buffalo music award winners Babik will host a 100th birthday celebration in honor of Django.  Babik (named after Django’s son) has enlisted the talents of French guitar master Stephane Wrembel and his group “The Django Experiment” to join them for a double billed concert at The Tralf on May 27th at 8pm.

Stephane Wrembel has been leaving audiences awestruck with his high energy improvisations and an unparalleled level of virtuosity for over a decade.  His ability to blend traditional gypsy jazz with world and rock elements has given new life to the age old music.  Growing up only 3 miles from Django’s final resting place, Wrembel discovered the jazz legend in his teens and never looked back.  Spending years travelling and studying with gypsy masters he harnessed the soul, passion, and fire of this music.

Word of Wrembel’s talent reverberated far and fast.  Upon moving to New York, Les Paul invited Wrembel to join him at his legendary Monday night concerts in Manhattan.  Music icons have been clambering ever since to have an opportunity to work with this talent.  He recorded and toured with David Grisman to support their 2005 album “Gypsy Rumble”.  Wrembel’s composition “Big Brother” from that album appears on the soundtrack to Woody Allen’s movie “Vicky Christina Barcelona”.  He has performed all over the world with other legends such as Patti Smith, Mark O’Connor, John Scofield, Elvis Costello, as well as Buffalo favorite Ryan Montbleau Band.

Perhaps that why Rolling Stone magazine calls him “A revelation”; the NY times calls him “Fast, intense and full of charisma…radical”; Relix Magazine says Stephane is “One of the greatest guitar players I have ever seen…and I don’t say that lightly”.  We should all take the advice of the critics at All About Jazz and "Don't miss this opportunity to see a truly astonishing talent in action."

Buffalo gypsy jazz outfit Babik will open the show with their own interpretation of the style.  Fresh off a round of gigs through the south, the group is glad to be back home for one of only a few concerts in the area this year.  These two groups met in New York City in January for a string of 5 sold out shows at the legendary “Joe’s Pub”.  These shows were such a success and so well received that the groups have decided to have an encore in Buffalo

Thursday May 27th.

Doors at 7pm/Show at 8pm.

Tickets are $20 presale and $23 the day of show
